Wildcats score 29th O-K Gold Conference crown

So that’s a wrap win the O-K Gold Conference softball season, and to the surprise of no one, Wayland polished off as perfect record Wednesday afternoon with a 15-0 rout of South Christian.

The game was a resumption of the second game of a doubleheader Monday, which was halted suddenly by the appearance of lightning. The Wildcats were leading 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

The two teams only needed to play three frames, as the contest was called in the fifth by the 10-run mercy rule.

First sacker Carli Miklusicak drove in five runs on four hits to lead the Wildcats past South Christian.

Miklusicak hit a home run to left field in the second scoring two, doubled in the fourth scoring two, and singled in the third, scoring another.

The Wildcats added five more runs in the top of the third inning on four hits. Winning pitcher Harmony Laker homered to center field, scoring two runs, Miklusicak singled, scoring one , Rae Stallard hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Johnson singled, in another to cap the rally.

Leading 8-0, the ‘Cats plated five more runs in the fourth on four hits. Madi Ludema, who was the winning pitcher in the opener Monday, doubled, scoring one run, Miklusicak doubled, scoring two and Johnson singled, scoring two more.

Laker fired a three-hit shutout over five innings, striking out four and walking none. 

Wayland collected13 hits in the game. Ludema, Laker and Johnson each had multiple hits, Kaidence Coon stole two bases and the Wildcats played errorless ball in the field.

The victory propelled Wayland’s overall record to 25-6-1. Though the ‘Cats are done with league play, they will play Grand Haven next Wednesday and Caledonia the following Friday to tune up for the district tournament at Hopkins Saturday, when they face Allegan. Hopkins and Middleville Thornapple Kellogg will be the other two teams.
