‘Cats sweep Cedar Springs for 15th straight victory

The Wayland softball team captured its 14th and 15th consecutive victories Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep at Cedar Springs, 15-0 and 7-1.The Varsity Softball Team defeated Cedar Springs 15-0.

Kennedy Cole led the hitting attack in the first game, going 3-for-3, with a home run.  Kaelyn Sikkema was 3-4, at the plate, Rya VanderKooi was 2-for-2, with a homer.  Other ‘Cats collecting hits were Kami Morse, Hannah Rairigh, Oakleigh Hulst, Liberty Laker, Emma Tornes and Jada Mohon.

Emma Ludema took the victory on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out 10 in four innings.

Leading the Wildcats’ attack in game two was Kami Morse and Hannah Rairigh, both going 2-3.  Rairigh had a double.  Wildcats getting one hit for the game were Kaelyn Sikkema, Kennedy Cole and Harmony Laker.  Kennedy Cole hit a double.

Emma Ludema came in to end the game on the mound for the last two innings, striking out five batters in relief of freshman Harmony Laker, who struck out five in five innings of work.

Wayland has won 15 straight games after a season-opening loss to Division 1 ranked Jenison and has earned honorable mention accolades in Division 2. The Wildcats also are undefeated in the O-K Gold Conference and they seek to repeat as league champions.
