The Wayland High School varsity volleyball team went undefeated in pool play Friday, but the lost two squeakers to Kenowa Hills in the 12-team West Michigan Volleyball Officials Tournament.

“This was our first time hosting this prestigious event that benefits students with scholarships, and we had a great start to the season,” said coach Kara Laker.

The Wildcats defeated Holland, Newaygo, Covenant Christian and Grant in straight sets to earn the top seed in the Gold Bracket.

But then they lost to Kenowa 26-24 and 25-23 in two “incredibly hard fought” games.

“This group has so much fight and we are really looking forward to continue to get better, pass better and continue to escalate our pace of play,” Laker said.

Leaders for the day included Reese Veltman in aces, Harmony Laker in kills, Jade Barghahn in assists, Reese Coughlin and Harmony Laker in blocks, and Reese Veltman with digs.

Wayland this weekend will play at the Cornerstone Showcase.
