The Wayland High School varsity softball team extended its winning streak to six games Thursday with a doubleheader sweep over South Christian.
It was the O-K Gold Conference opener for both squads after their matchup was postponed Tuesday because of inclement weather.
Senior hurler Emma Ludema threw a two-hit shutout at the Sailors 8-0 in a complete game performance in the opening contest. She struck out a dozen batters.
On the offensive side, freshman Harmony Laker collected two hits and two runs batted in. Teammates Hannah Rairigh and Kaelynn Sikkema also had an RBI.
Laker tossed a shutout in the nightcap and the Wildcats’ offense came alive with 16 hits in a 19-0 romp.
Kami Morse came up with four hits in four at-bats, Kennedy Cole was 3-3, with a double and two triples. Emma Tornes had two hits, Kaelyn Sikkema had two hits, with a triple. Hannah Raiirigh, Rya VanderKooi, Harmony Laker, Emma Ludema, Jada Mohon, Grace Kincaid and Reese Veltman, each had one hit. Wayland plated five runs in the first inning, added nine in the second and nine in the third to run away with the ballgame. Morse had four RBIs and Cole and Rairigh had three apiece.
The contest was halted in the third inning because of the mercy rule.
Wayland has captured six straight victories after a season-opening 4-1 loss to Division 1 Jenison.
Coach Cheri Ritz’s Wildcats, defending O-K Gold Conference, district and regional champions, will play Saturday in a tournament at Holland.
