The Wayland varsity baseball team swept a doubleheader Tuesday against Ottawa Hills to lift its overall season record to 13-16.
The highlight of the day was a strong pitching performance from senior Jared “JJ” Jones, who tossed a complete game, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 1 hit, while striking out 7 in the Wildcats’ 12-2 victory in the nightcap.
Pacing the offensive attack were Bradey Weston, Jones, Jeff Betz, and Matt Schaendorf. Weston was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs, and a double. Jones was 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Betz went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Schaendorf was 1-for-1 with 2 runs scored.
Wayland won the opener 17-1 over the Bengals in a 3-inning contest shortened by the mercy rule.
Getting the win on the mound was Carter Morse, who 2 innings, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits while striking out 3. Jeff Betz pitched the 3rd inning, allowing 1 run, which was earned, on 1 hit, while striking out 2.
Leading the Wildcat offense were Logan Sevigny, Parker Atwell and Travis Cutler. Sevigny was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, an RBI, and 4 stolen bases. Atwell went 1-for-2 with a run scored and 4 RBI’s. Cutler was 2-for-2 with 4 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.
The Wildcats will be back in action Thursday, as they travel to Ottawa Hills High School for their final OK-Gold Conference game of the season. The single game is set to begin at 4:15 p.m.
