Wildcats take Gull Lake tourney, take out No. 1 team in Class A

WHS softball Gull LakeThe Wayland varsity softball team, ranked No. 3 in the first state-wide Class B poll this season, had a terrific day at the Gull Lake Invitational, copping the top prize among the 24 teams.

The invitational included seven state-ranked teams, including Portage Central, ranked in in Class A, which was shut out 3-0 by Wildcat senior ace hurler Mallory Teunissen.

Wayland also got the best of Parchment 7-1 in the tourney opener and finally Teunissen blanked Mattawan in the championship game, 4-0, on a two-hitter. Tuenissen, a four-year starter on the mound for the Wildcats, finished the day with 36 strikeouts.

Leading Lady Wildcat hitters for the day were freshmen Abby Merice and Sydney Urben and junior Mackenzy Kasper.

Coach Cheri Ritz commented, “So proud of this team! Great day for the Wildcats!”

Wayland also swept a doubleheader Friday afternoon with Middleville Thornapple Kellogg, 12-1 and 9-0, to lift its O-K Girls-SoftballGold Conference record to 4-0. Coach Cheri Ritz’s group now sports a 10-1 record overall, with its only blemish a 1-0 extra-inning loss to Zeeland West.

The Wildcats Tuesday will take on Grand Rapids Catholic Central, another league opponent.
