The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team will take a 4-1 overall season record into the GRCC tournament Jan. 3-4 at Aquinas College.
The Wildcats Claimed their fourth victory of the season Friday, Dec. 21, with a 74-62 victory at Detroit Country Day.
Senior pivot Cory Ainsworth netted 34 points and gathered 11 rebounds to pace Wayland’s attack. Senior guard Ternor Hudson had his finest varsity ballgame with 19 points, including three, three-point field goals. Sophomore guard Riley Fields added eight points and a surprising seven rebounds.
Ainsworth is averaging 26.2 points per game thus far this season, along with an average of just shy of 10 rebounds per contest.
MaxPreps has reported that Wayland will play Kent City Thursday at 6 p.m. in the first round and a second game is planned for Friday, with the time yet to be determined.
The regular season will resume Tuesday, Jan. 8, with a contest against O-K Gold Conference rival Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.
The Catholic Central Cougars (5-1) take on the Ludington Orioles (2-3) at 7:30 Thursday and the Friday schedule will have the winners playing at 7:30 following a consolation game at 6:00 pm.
