Wildcats win 1 of 3 against state-ranked SC Sailors

The Wayland varsity baseball team won one of three contests last week with state-ranked South Christian and brought its overall season record to 11-10 overall.

The Wildcats split a doubleheader with South Christian on Tuesday, May 9, taking the first game 12-7, but falling 5-2 in the nightcap.

Winning pitcher Carter Koopman went 6-2/3 innings, giving up 9 hits, 7 runs, 3 earned runs, 0 BB, 2 K’s. Peyton Moore pitched 1/3 of an inning out of the bullpen, getting the final out on a fly ball. 

Dustin Loomans was 2-4, with a double, single and 2 RBI, Cameron Carnevale and Carter Koopman each had a double with an RBI too. 

Peyton Moore started and pitched 3 innings in game two, yielding 5 hits, 3 runs, 3 earned runs, 1 BB, and 1 K. 

Reagan Mutschler came on in relief, pitching 3 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run, 0 BB, 5 Ks.

On the offensive side, Mutschler was 3-3, with a double, 2 singles, 1 BB and 2 RBI. Bryce Calkins added 2 hits, double and a single. Carnevale also had a double and single of his own. Dustin Loomans had a double. Koopman and Cameron Bogard had a single apiece.

The Wildcats lost 4-2 on the next day in the third game of the series.

Bryce Calkins hurled 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 4 runs, 2 earned runs, 2 BB, 3 Ks. Carnevale pitched 1 inning in relief, yielding 2 hits, 0 runs. 

Brayden Byrnes went 3-for-3 with 3 singles. Carnevale was 2-3 with 2 singles, and Loomans and Koopman each added a singles. 

Wayland enjoyed an offensive festival Friday at Cornerstone University in a 17-4 decision over West Michigan Aviation Academy.

Craig Steensma started on the mound, giving up 3 runs, all earned, with three walks. Reagan Mutschler came on in relief, lasting 3 2/3 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 3 BB, and 6 Ks. earning the win. Peyton Moore pitched 2 innings, gave up 2 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run, 0 BB, 2 Ks.

Zander Davenport worked the last inning.

Offensively, Mutschler was 3-5, 1 double, 2 singles a BB. with 4 RBI; Bryce Calkins 3-6, double, 2 singles and 3 RBIs; Dustin Loomans 3-5, 1 double, 2 singles, a BB, with 2 RBIs; Cameron Bogard added 2 singles a BB and 2 RBIs. 

Carnevale, Koopman, Moore, Brett Dutcher, Jackson Chesley, and Lucas Varnagatas added base hits of their own. 

The Wildcats own a 5-7 record in the O-K Gold Conference.

Wayland will play on its home field Tuesday in a doubleheader vs GR Catholic Central and then will play the Cougars Thursday in a single contest 

The Wildcats will take part in the Holland Invitational Saturday.
