“If it wasn’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have no luck at all.” — Albert King, “Born under a Bad Sign”

Junior guard Justin Holtz has been lost for the season because of an injury he suffered playing football.

The hard-luck, short and inexperienced Wayland boys’ basketball team saw its luck get worse Friday.

The Wildcats’ season record fell to 0-3 with a non-league defeat at the hands of Grand Rapids West Catholic, 76-57. And they lost the services of starting junior guard Justin Holtz for the rest of the campaign because he underwent surgery for an injury he suffered early in the football season.

The very young and inexperienced Wildcats have no seniors on this year’s squad. Even the head coach, Chris Jasinski, is in his first year after taking over the reigns from the retired Mike Hudson.

Junior guard-forward Austin Reeder and sophomore guard-forward Caleb Wielhouwer both scored 14 points to lead the Wildcats. Freshman guard Brett Bultsema added 10 points and junior guard Tyler Omness added eight.

Wayland will take a short break because it will play Wyoming Godwin Heights in the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament after Christmas, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26
