Business for the Hopkins Township Planning Commission was unable to move forward Tuesday night. While the agenda included special use permit reviews, work on the data center ordinance, and 2026 ordinance updates, the commission could not take action on any of these items.
Lori Castello of Professional Code Inspections (PCI) informed the commission that she could not complete the reports for the special use permit reviews or the ordinance updates, citing a staffing shortage due to maternity leave. Because Castello is developing a data center training course for township officials, the commission decided to pause work on the data center ordinance until that training has been completed.
It was also learned that the Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) and Ag Preservation Board still needed volunteers. There was no progress on that matter as well.
Similarly, the Hopkins Downtown Development Authority (DDA) made no headway on its plan goals and boundary map. The township attorney was to review the plan, but that review has not been completed.
During public comment, attendees asked about the process for modifying the boundary map. While the commissioners were uncertain about the full procedure, they confirmed that a public hearing will be required and that notice will be posted on the township website.
Regarding the solar project, township officials stated they were awaiting a report on a meeting between the township attorney and NorthStar Clean Energy – Allegan Solar LLC, but have received no update as of yet.
